BSB has saved 47,000 wooden pallets

Steel pallets made from recycled steel have replaced wooden pallets at BSB Industry. The gain is savings of millions of Danish kroner, greater safety in the workplace and a smaller environmental impact.

Product And Work

Five years ago, foreman at BSB Industry Erik Fusager, together with his skilled colleagues, came up with the idea of replacing the use of wooden pallets with more solid steel pallets. The idea was an offspring from BSB Industry's Continuous Business Improvement (CBI) program.

- Over time we grew tired of watching hundreds of wooden pallets go to waste every single week because they were crushed by the heavy flanges we produce. We often had to use and discard three wooden pallets for every flange, before the flange was ready to be shipped to the customer, foreman Erik Fusager remembers.

A sustainable investment

Over 5 years that we have used steel pallets, I would estimate that we in total have saved approximately 47,000 wooden pallets. It is of course great news for the environment by that we produce savings on the use of wood, just as we are pleased with the financial gain of having several million Danish kroners being saved.

Recycled steel pallets are a benefit for the environment

He raised the issue with his staff about what to do and out of the blue arose the brilliant idea of recycled steel pallets.

- We realized that we have steel residues from the cutting table available every single day, and it seemed obvious to use parts of that for steel pallets. The advantages of steel pallets soon manifested themselves. Steel pallets last longer, they can be stacked and they never break. They are good for workers’ safety as well, says Erik Fusager.

- The CBI project with steel pallets is without doubt one of the most valuable projects I have been part of. To me personally, it is of great satisfaction to help solve a challenge and make a difference measured in terms of finances as well as safety and climate, Erik Fusager emphasizes.

The math

BSB used to use and discard about 200 wooden pallets a week.
200 wooden pallets times 47 weeks = 9,400 wooden pallets
Over 5 years it adds up to: 5 x 9,400 = 47,000 wooden pallets
