BSB switches to climate-friendly CO2-neutral welding gas

As the first company in Denmark and the second in the Nordic countries, BSB has just signed a deal for the supply of Linde Green - green, climate-friendly and CO2-neutral cutting and welding gas.

Linde Green BSB Industry

At BSB, Winnie Fedders, Head of QHSE & CBI, is pleased that the new agreement with Linde Gas provides a lower CO2 footprint in the company's green energy accounts.

- Cutting and welding gas is an inevitable ingredient in the production of welded components and larger welded constructions in steel, stainless steel and aluminum. However, with the CO2-neutral gas from the Linde Green series, we can now produce with a greener tilt and with a smaller climate footprint. This is of great importance to us at BSB, where we are at a constant lookout for opportunities to make our processes more climate-friendly, says Winnie Fedders.

CO2-neutral welding gas in tanks

The CO2-neutral cutting and welding gas is supplied by Linde Gas, which is part of Northern Europe's leading industrial gas company with a complete product range within industrial gases and special gases. With the climate-friendly product range, they have taken a pioneering step towards a greener welding process.

- Right now, the climate-friendly welding gases oxygen, nitrogen and argon will be delivered to us in tanks. These are the gases that Linde can currently supply that are CO2-neutral. Later we hope to add bottled climate-friendly cutting and welding gases to the supply. At present, this may not be possible, as they are all mixtures of several gases, but we expect it to be feasible in the near future, explains Winnie Fedders.

Although the CO2-neutral product line is more expensive than the traditional cutting and welding gas, Winnie Fedders has no doubt that the investment is an appropriate, right step in a sustainable direction.

- The Linde Green product range is approximately 7 percent more expensive for us. We at BSB have decided to accept this added expense because we believe that we as a company in the “black” industry carry a special responsibility for the climate and for reducing our CO2 emissions, she explains.

We have a responsibility, even if it costs

Green gas strategy puts sustainability on the agenda

Gas with a smaller climate footprint is an important factor in the overall green transition. The Danish Energy Agency's calculations in the Green Gas Strategy show that Danish gas consumption can become 100 percent green and CO2-neutral by 2035.

Here, Linde plays an important role, as they use renewable energy and green fuel in the production and transportation of the gases in the Linde Green series, while a very small part is climate compensated through certified afforestation projects.

- The cutting and welding gas we get from tanks from Linde is made on green energy, and therefore contributes to us being able to achieve our common climate goals within the green transition of gas consumption. At BSB, of course, we cannot make the difference alone. But we can help show the way for other companies in the heavy industry, says an ambitious Winnie Fedders.

Reasons why BSB has chosen the Linde Green series

  • The same product quality and quality assurance – plus 100 percent CO2 -neutral
  • Production is based on well-documented wind power and solar energy projects
  • Green fuel is used for transportation
  • The remaining emissions are climate compensated through certified afforestation projects
  • Linde Green is audited and validated by a third party
  • We receive a certificate with calculations of how much we save in CO2 emissions
